Plans for starting the trip
Looks like I’ll probably be leaving during Labor day weekend (September 5th). I’m hoping to bring a few people along for the first leg of my journey. Let me know if you’re interested in coming…
I’ll be starting my trip by heading to Northwestern New Mexico to see Chaco Canyon, and then cross the border into Colorado to visit Mesa Verde. Both of these parks are the sites of ancient native american civilizations. You can see all kinds of amazing things like cliff dwellings, multi-storied buildings that used advanced stone masonry techniques (built between 800—1,200 AD), petroglyphs, artifacts, and some beautiful natural landscapes. Speaking of landscapes… if we have the time and interest, we may head over to Monument Valley in the Four Corners area.
After that, we’ll head west to Pagosa Springs, Colorado to soak in some natural, mineral-rich hot springs. The place to go for that is The Springs Resort, where the hot spring water is fed into beautiful terraced pools that overlook the San Juan river. It’s a deeply relaxing and fun experience!
From there I’ll probably leave everyone behind and head north to Crestone, a quaint villiage town renowned for spiritual diversity. Despite a population of less than 200 people, you can find centers and monasteries of many religious and spiritual faiths, including Hindu, Zen, Tibetan, and Roman Catholic. I have a feeling that I’ll be spending at least a couple days there taking in the sights, sounds, and meditations of each faith, and meeting some very enlightened individuals. I hear there’s also some hot springs there, and at another cool place further north called the Orient Land Trust in Valley View. If you haven’t noticed by now, I love hot springs!
