Traveling Cargopants

A journey into the west, the self, and beyond

Preparations

I’m finding that there are lots of things to do to prepare for this journey. I’ll be on the road for the next two months, so all my material possessions will be reduced to what can fit into a car — potentially less if I’m going to have friends come on portions of the journey with me.

Gotta do an inventory of what I have, and buy the rest. The basics are… 10 days of clothes [i.e. 4 t-shirts and 2 pairs of cargo pants {;-) ], including summer and winter wear. Shoes for normal wear, hiking, and getting wet. Camping equipment… tent, sleeping bag, pillow, blankets, cooking gear & utensils, axe & shovel, flashlight & lantern, jug for water, enough insect repellent to kill an acre of bugs, and perhaps a tranquilizer gun, airhorn or just a boom box blaring some Ozzy Osbourne to deal with big, vicious animals. Car entertainment… good music, some audio books (I’m gonna learn Italian!), and something to play movies for when I get bored watching the road. And I’m thinking perhaps even bringing my bike along… we’ll see.

In addition to things to buy for the trip, there’s lots of things to wrap up back at home. I’ll be moving out of my home and office space, so everything will go into storage (which isn’t too much since I already live pretty simply). Gotta find a temporary home for my plants, especially my 10-year old Ivy — glad that I don’t have any animals or kids at this point. Get current or pre-pay all my bills. Make sure car insurance is paid up, and check into travel insurance. AAA membership is a great thing to have when on the road. Make sure the car is in great shape — oil, tires, maintenance schedule and trip inspection. And… the list goes on.

And finally, make sure to spend some quality time with friends! Over time, your friends become your family, and those bonds you have with them are priceless. I’m really gonna miss a lot of people here!

Sure. I’ll just stop by Atlanta on my way from New Mexico to Colorado…

I will be coming to ATL in November though. I look forward to seeing you then!
