A journey into the west, the self, and beyond

Trusting in the universe

Traveling like this is absolutely amazing! I don’t really have a set agenda apart from wanting to see certain places. Often I find myself wanting to stay longer in a place than I had originally thought, so often I don’t always know where I’ll be when until the day before. I’m mostly staying with friends, or friends of friends, or meeting (cool) strangers on Couch Surfing, or meeting new people along the way who offer me a place to stay. I’m totally in the moment and just following the compass of my heart and intuition. It takes a lot of trust in the universe/god to be guided in this way and let new experiences and new people come to me, and to rely on other people to open their homes and their hearts to share with me.

Most people (myself especially) need a routine that they can rely on, whether it be a home, a steady job, a circle of friends that they see on a regular basis, or all of the above and more. That’s where the trust comes in. When I’m in a situation where I’m in fear or worried about where I’ll be staying, or if I’ve gotten lost while driving out in the boonies, or not knowing anyone nearby who I can be friends with, I begin to pray and the fear goes away and I’m guided to the right place. I repeat a mantra that goes something like “God, I know you will take care of me and look after me and lead me to who I’m supposed to meet or where I’m supposed to stay. I open myself to your blessings and new experiences that I couldn’t even begin to imagine if I were to try to plan this myself. Thank you!” I’m learning to be far more flexible than I ever have been. I’m learning to commune more with the divine. I’m learning to walk a path where I can only see one step ahead, and sometimes not even that — think of Eddie Murphy in The Golden Child where he has to cross that dark room with the wooden poles, or Indiana Jones crossing the cavern on the invisible ledge.

I’ve only been traveling for a week and a half, and already I’ve seen some beautiful, amazing sights — large, rushing, clean rivers, mountain peaks that reach 14,000 feet, beautiful sunsets with deep gradient colors from orange to red to purple, some of the purest blue skies, light rains that kiss your face, and heavy flooding rains preceded by hail, being closer to nature by getting to observe animals like graceful elk and deer, hawks and ravens gliding in the sky, and scampering little chipmunks, and the ancient cliff-dwelling homes of the Ancestral Puebloans who lived in the southwest from A.D. 500-1300. And there’s a lot more to come…

God/Universe, thank you for everything!!!
