Heading South to get North
After Mesa Verde, I drove back to Durango and spent a few great days with Kundalini Kirsten and her great husband and super-sweet daughter. They have an apple tree next to their cabin where they pick fresh fruit and turn it into delicious treats. I was gifted with some out-of-this-world, homemade apple butter that I got to share with another friend — I think we finished the entire jar in less than 3 days! Apparently we weren’t the only ones who like them apples… as I was walking to their guest house one night, I came face to face with a large deer who was getting her fill. In a calming voice I told her that I needed to get to the cabin, but that she could go back to eating once I passed by. As I moved forward slowly, she bounded off a short distance and stayed there keeping an eye on me. When I got to the cabin and closed the door, I looked back out the window and watched her slowly walk back to the tree to finish her dinner. It was a great experience of keeping harmony with nature.
From Durango I took a detour in my trip and drove back into New Mexico to take care of some business. I stopped in Santa Fe for a couple of nights and stayed with friends, and I got to eat one last meal of delicious New Mexican food — stuffed sopapillas with green chile! (Real sopapillas, not that deep fried tortilla crap you find in Mexican restaurants around the USA.)
I got to spend a great time with my sister hiking up in the Santa Fe ski basin area where all the Aspen trees were a golden yellow, and we were both snapping off photos of all the beautiful nature around us! On my way back north again, I bypassed EspaƱola like the plague because I wasn’t ready to see old friends or go into the past just yet. I camped the night at Ojo Caliente Hot Springs and had a great soak the next morning before heading back up to Colorado.
